Moving in day is stressful, its hard to know what to take and what to leave behind. Make sure you don’t forget your essentials, which could result in panic! However, not to worry even if you forget your toothbrush- most things are replaceable! Remind yourself a little trip to the shop will sort it out.  However, here’s a little list put together to help you avoid all of that.

Now for the Do’s and Dont’s of moving into halls, here we go:

DO pack sufficient food for freshers week. There’s not a feeling worse than spending all your money on nights out and coming back to an empty fridge. Familiarise yourself with the nearest supermarket on campus to get you going for the first couple of days.

DON’T be focused on unpacking immediately! If you are, make sure the door is open os introduce yourself to your flatmates as you’ll be living with them for most of the year. Suggest spending the first night going out together, suggest some drinking games, maybe bring some chocolate to share. Chances are that they’ll be as scared as you, dont forget that you’re all in the same position!

DON’T forget to bring the essentials! It would be an absolute nightmare to realise you’ve forgotten your laptop charger or your ID, especially if you live a 5 hour journey away! That would be the last thing you’d want to start off freshers week.

DO Bring lots of decorations! Remember, you will be spending a lot of time in your room so make sure you love it by making it an environment you can be cosy and productive in. Fairy lights and pictures are easy, inexpensive way of making your room feel prettier.

DON’T worry! Things go wrong, its no big deal if your key isn’t working, or someone’s already moved into your room. These things happen, but don’t let yourself panic and assume the worst. Mistakes happen- easy to make and easy to fix!

DO get to know your surroundings! Check out your halls, the laundry room, reception, your closest food shop, local coffee shop!

DON’T put too much pressure on your first day! Yes, university is the best 3 years you’ll experience but most likely you’ll be homesick, nervous and shy the first day, it’s natural that you don’t experience the best of university on your first day there. There’s too much pressure on freshers week to be the most enjoyable week, but for the majority of people, this comes later on in first year when you’re closer to your flatmates and you find your friends!

Thats the end of my Dos and Don’t’s. Hope this provided a little relief to you in the run up to freshers, good luck for results day to all of you!
